Behind-the-Build

The Glacier Hut is not your typical remote Alaska getaway: it’s a cozy, well-designed haven nestled amid raw Alaska landscape — a place where visitors can disconnect from civilization and truly immerse themselves in Alaska’s wilderness. The build of the hut reflects a blend of practicality and ambition: it’s designed to withstand harsh conditions, while still offering a slice of comfort far from roads and towns.

Every beam and board was flown in. The airstrip was cleared by hand. What stands on the ridge today didn’t arrive through convenience—it arrived one load at a time, with each landing dictated by weather, daylight, and the season. The walls were pieced together in the wind, tools hauled in backpacks, and materials stacked on an old glacial moraine. Nothing about the build was easy, but that’s exactly what’s made it a labor of love.

Even though construction is complete, the logistics of a fly-in hut are not for the faint of heart. Clean linens and water are flown in for each stay, and the remoteness of the hut’s location requires constant creative problem solving. We wouldn’t want it any other way.

Meet Your Hosts

I’m Matt Keller, an Alaskan-born bush pilot, founder of Blue Ice Aviation, and the builder behind the Glacier Hut - albeit with much help from friends and family.

This is my family - Samantha, Ali, Mae & Rondo a.k.a. the hut helpers. The Glacier Hut has been a dream years in the making, but officially came to life in 2024 after five long years of construction.

Whether you call Alaska home or are visiting for the first time, I hope you have an incredible stay.
